I was pulling the string on one of my window shades to pull them up, the shade snapped, a piece broke off, and the whole thing came tumbling down. The shades were part of the apartment when I moved in (I didn’t buy them myself, they are my landlord’s property). Who pays to fix or repair them – me or my landlord? I think its me, but am unsure.
You pay for things you damaged. However a lot of landlords, me at least, do not sweat the small stuff and would not worry about that. I usually tell the tenants to buy a new one, deduct it from rent and send me the receipt, I just write it off.
If the item wore out, the land lord replaces it. It is routine maintenance.
If you caused it to break by yanking too hard on the cord, you are responsible for replacing it.
It is you who would replace them find something cheaper price wise and replace it with that.
As long as they were used with reasonable wear and tear, and you weren’t careless, you shouldn’t have to pay. Carefully read your lease, and let your landlord know what happened. Ask them to install a new shade as soon as possible
The lease should confirm your question.
It should say whether repairs or landlord’s or tenant’s responsibility.
If it’s something you broke, whether accidentally or on purpose, then you’d need to take care of it. If it’s something that’s just old and plain worn out and eventually quits working, then it would be landlord’s job.
